It's taken me at least a week to be able to type in a comment because every time I start, the tears come. When I heard Sensei Fukuda's story I cried and cried some more when she cried. She has sacrificed so much. My daughter is 15 and a martial artist who practices Shotokan karate. Sensei's accomplishments hit me very very hard, as my daughter has and will continue to have challenges to overcome before she reaches her first black belt. But just like Sensei Fukuda (I am so excited to type that!!) she loves her art and will not quit. Our dojo is putting together motivational posters, and I created one that I would love to send to Sensei Fukuda, in honor of her accomplishment. It is of my 15 year old daughter being strong, being kind, and being beautiful. Years ago it was Laurel Thatcher Ulrich and her "Well-behaved women seldom make history" phrase that sparked a cultural revolution of sorts. And ironically, that phrase fits for Sensei Fukuda as well. However, in this American age of reality show standards of beauty, I count us blessed that we are seeing this history happen for a woman who is strong, kind, beautiful, and REAL. Please please let Sensei Fukuda know she is not alone, for her martial arts family reaches around the world! I can't wait for this film to be released! :)

Congratulations to Fukuda sensei. My heart goes out to you for what you have achieved in spite of huge obstacles put in your way -you are an inspiration to women in a world that does not always recognise them or their achievements. I really hope this film changes some of that.

With respect and honour

The obstinate sexism is disgusting. Imagine how many other woman would have risen further faster in the ranks without it.

My heartfelt congratulation to Fukuda Sensei. I sincerely hope your story will inspire many martial art practitioners to honestly focus on the cultivation of the hearts and mind instead of being driven by the ego and vanity that are prevalent in many of today's martial art schools.
