Flying Carp Productions’ mission is to create and disseminate films to inspire and stimulate creative thinking. We aim to generate a productive flow of energy, encourage community, and enhance mutual coexistence on this planet. We are a San Francisco based production company, which combines award winning documentary film and advertising experience.
Symbolizing strength, courage and ambition for children in Japan, the “Flying Carp” derives from the tale of a carp that swam upstream to heaven, and became a magnificent dragon.
Yuriko Gamo Romer – Director/Producer/Editor, founded Flying Carp in 1999. She is currently in post production with Mrs. Judo: Be Strong, Be Gentle, Be Beautiful about the inspirational life of 97 year old Keiko Fukuda, the highest ranking woman in judo history. Her film Occidental Encounters aired on PBS and won a Student Academy Award, The Jimmy Stewart Memorial Crystal Heart Award, and The Silver Apple among others. She also directed, produced and edited, Dancing with God and recently completed a short historical animation Friend Ships about the historical tale of Manjiro. Other filmmaking credits include; Reflection, Kids will be Kids, Sunnyside of the Slope, and Fusion. Yuriko is a graduate of Stanford University’s Masters program in documentary filmmaking.
Prior to making documentary films, Yuriko spent ten years as an advertising art director and graphic designer. She has a BFA in Art and Design from UCLA. Her artistic interests go back to early childhood, when she first discovered painting, ceramics and sculpture.
